Built-In Gutter & Slate Roof Restoration
Alexander Vedder was a famous judge and barrister at the turn of the century and his house (ca. 1907) sits prominently in the historic General Electric Realty Plot neighborhood in Schenectady, New York. As a result of many years of water damage, the built-in, Philadelphia-style, Yankee gutters needed to be rebuilt. This required slate roofing preservation, copper metalwork, various flashing and waterproofing details, and extensive carpentry restoration--not to mention a serious commitment to preservation by the homeowners. While this style of gutter system was not uncommon on Georgian-style mansions (including the famous Hancock Houses of Beacon Hill (Boston) and Ticonderoga, New York), many homeowners in the last century simply had the gutters covered over with snowslides or an extension of the roofing material. The homeowners' efforts to restore and preserve such architectural features is applauded.
