18th Century Stone Foundation
Paul Crim's home was burned to the ground during the Andrustown Massacre in 1778. Eleven people were killed and his infant son kidnapped by indians loyal to the British. The original home, outbuildings, and others in the village were burned to the ground. The new home was built atop the original limestone foundation. The cellar entrance walls and adjoining corners were bowing and collapsing. The entranceway was excavated after the house was properly supported inside. The corners and walls were then rebuilt with the original, existing stone. The original stairs had been long since replaced with concrete — Olde Mohawk built stairs of bluestone, a sandstone native to the region.
